Moreauville LA | Here are my thoughts from someone in the coastal zone.
At the end of the day, I hate the subsidies I have received. Surely someone will chime in that I shouldn't have accepted them. But the nature of the game, and farming is what I do and do a very good job at, requires acceptance of them for me to stay in business. With that said, had of my acres are in a crop that "receives no direct subsidies". That crop is sugarcane. It is consistent, pays well, can make a lot of money, but meanwhile depends on the sugar program to retain its current status.
Aside from that, crop insurance here has paid many people over the years. In 27 crops, I have had one crop loss claim and one corn replant. DOWN HERE, higher than 70% coverage is unafffordable.
With this said, and speaking of payments, the big rice and cotton areas have received the most per acre. Both of which are capital intensive crops, but when they start crying about the loss of payments, I cannot help but think of the 500K hunting camps, fancy airplanes and turnrow farmer mantra. Some guys are only where they are because of oil/gas wells, papa had a lot of paid for land or a combination of both. Most of these "incredible" operations all have a prop holding them up. And don't acknowledge it was handed to them.
So, what is farming?
There is farming
There is being a farmer
And
There is Sport Farming.
