Subject: RE: Electric Hybrid (Heat Pump) Water Heaters

Alpena MI
I installed an 80 gallon Rheem in June. I went from propane to electric hybrid, and I can't really say that I can see it on my electric bill, maybe $10 a month at the most. Our electric bill runs about $180 a month and it's fairly consistent, so I think it would show up if it was using any real amount of power. We have a 7 bedroom house that only my wife, 2 little girls and I live in but I decided that the cost difference between a 50 gallon and an 80 gallon wasn't enough to get a smaller heater. I don't know that the coils ever run, because there is more than enough buffer for the heat pump to keep up with our usage. Ours is in the basement and it definitely cools the basement. Our house is heated with a woodstove in the basement with natural airflow (no fans or ductwork, Amish built house, heat works amazingly well). I'm not far enough into the heating season yet to say whether it's a problem to have the heater pumping cold air into the basement. So far it hasn't been.
