You need to think of a weaned calf as a teenager. They can do wild and crazy things older cows wont. But if the momma is gentil a good chance your calves will be too.

I am with Russ on keeping them penned at least 10 days before turning them back out. Spend extra time with them at feeding, get them use to people without momma to protect them. I have let horse a trainer have my replacement heifers for the of training of cutting horses. They keep decent hay in the bunk and once they learn they cannot get away from the horse by running they send them home much easier to handle.
