Subject: Post Weaning Calves - Confinement vs Pasture

Have always separated and hauled calves to the barn/feedlot at weaning (October/November), cows continue grazing well into the fall/winter.

Am going to be limited on pen space starting next year and am considering weaning spring calves and turning back out to graze and supplement some grain. All will be sold as feeders. I have access to cornstalks and cover crops that usually get pretty good growth post wheat harvest.

Anyone do this? Have read some stories of recently weaned calves getting crazy and running through fence and scattering all over. So that’s my main concern, it’s a matter of Feedlot Continuous fence vs 3 or 4 wire High tensile.

They are all electric fence trained but it still worries me a little. Curious to hear others thoughts/experiences.
