South Central MN | I'm on the younger side so don't know what it was like pre 80's, but I know dad mentioned that in the 70's many farms started expanding, then the 80's came and thinned out a lot. Nearly a whole generation got pushed out it seems like.
Profits weren't anything special in the 90's if I recall, and so that might have kept a damper on new farmers starting out. I graduated high school in the early 2000's, not too many others my age in farming and the farm size varies a bit.
If we can all hang on I think the farms are going to get bigger just due to a lack of farmers in general within the next 10 years. Not easy to get started now without a lot of money and/or land and even that is tough. I really worry about the generation that is still in school, could be very few of them that even get a chance if they do choose to farm. Likely most won't. | |
