| Years ago there was a farmer that made the comment that he was willing to work a certain amount of time per year and his goal was to keep the biggest machinery he could buy busy,,,for years 12 row planters were the big ones,in just a few years alot of guys went from 16 to 24 row. Also the use of semis to haul to better markets 50 miles away let some guys that were thinking of full time help get an extra employee that they could keep busy in the off season,,,some guys say that as long as the trucks break even during the winter they have the labor and the truck the rest of the year.
If you are organized and want to deal with employees there are opportunities and ways to cover a lot of ground with one big tractor or combine, a friend had a cousin who farmed a lot,,with 2 guys that showed up for 4-6 hours after their regular job he can cover 2,000 acres. My friend worked 3rd shift and would haul a load most mornings to an ethanol plant,THE WORK IS GETTING DONE SOMEHOW | |
