| Modern production ag almost demanded it. No need to spend hundreds of hours cultivating when a couple of passes by the custom sprayer takes care of the weeds. Vertical integration in the hog market killed the small hog guy. I remember helping dad load the last of them in 96.
I could probably add the ease that an only crop farm is to work vs any form of livestock as well. Perhaps that's a no kids for labor issue, but how many of you grew up with livestock that don't have them now and would hate to go back to a few hundred hogs or a couple dozen cow/calf pairs? Used to walk the grain off the farm. Now they just line up the long nose Petes and take it to the ethanol plant.
