Super low priced hog futures took me out of raising hog back in the early 2,000s so I lived what he's talking about. I chose not to risk the family farm signing one of these contracts and building hog units so I'm was out of that business back then. Many of my good friends did some form of contract and seemed to turn out ok. A few attempted to remain independent but selling fats without a contract was very challenging.
I didn't realize anyone like RFK jr was paying attention.
We lived through the hog crash of 1997 or 1998 (I can't remember) and had hogs until 2001 or so. After losing your butt in the late 90's I had no heart left for hogs when it happened again in the early 2000's. I thought I missed hogs until I mess with a couple for the kids 4H projects. I really don't miss them, well I miss them but not all the work. Nothing prettier than 10 newborn pigs nursing a sow!
When PSF started in counties northwest of where I'm at here in Misery, the original intent (I've been told) was to have farmers own the barns. But very few, if any, farmers did. So then PSF started buying all the ground and putting barns up.
The one positive for the area they were targeting in Missouri is that it was dead! Very very low population and nothing going on to draw anyone there. So really it was a good place to start a mega hog farm.
What's done is done. I wonder how long until no one will buy cattle at the sale barn because they are not out of a certain bull or are a certain color. Discounts are huge now if it's red, but still manageable and could be a lot worse.
The risk of RFK jr is way better than the course kamalalala and that regime would take the whole country. |
