Maybe tell Bill that it would be a bad idea for him to take another rent payment this year because he will have to pay more taxes and might even put him in a higher tax bracket. But if he sold it to you, he would owe $0 taxes because he should have gotten a step-up in basis when he inherited from his dad. Then he could invest it however he wants.
