Absolutely right about the solution for compaction... rooting activity. In most areas where cold temps could resolve compaction structural issues the compacted soil won't have enough free water in it to actually alter the structure thru crystallization of the water. Next question is how to create a soil which promotes rooting activity. Auxins which are stimulated by root association with microbes is one key. The other key is uniform density throughout the potential root zone. The only tool which I have found in 40 years that can all of this is the true vertical till units today marketed as the CurseBuster and Smart-Till.
