Subject: JD 9xxx erratic header speed

South Bend, IN
893 on 9600. Having a problem with the header speed not staying consistent. When I try to change speed I barely press the switch and it’ll jump dramatically in either decrease or increase. Say for instance it’s running at 540 and I’d like to get to 600. I barely touch the switch and it’ll jump way past and then I have to barely touch the switch to try and keep trying to get it where I want it. Also, it never seems to hold a speed. It could be set and then sometimes it’s slowed down or sped up. Yesterday I also ran into I’ve been picking poor corn at a higher speed and when I’d find a better spot of good tougher stalks the head would hit it and stop and smoke the belts like it didn’t have enough torque. All the belts are adjusted properly and the auger swing switch is in neutral as I’ve seen that do funny things. Thank you for any suggestions.
