North Central Iowa | I'm running a Crary air reel on a JD930 platform. I don't think I would buy an air reel new to put on an existing head (which would replace your existing reel), would seem like the air bar would be the way to go on an existing head (crary or AWS). I bought the head (well) used, but so far so good. 2nd season with it. From what I can tell, it's the older Crary gear box, so its lasted awhile. I talked to Crary at the Farm Progress Show this summer for any tips on maintenance, seems a major problem with the older gearboxes was being overfilled. They really stress that now in their documentation.
Don't know if particularly necessary, but I also start with the engine at low speed, feeder house engaged, then start the separator. Then ramp up to full speed. Seems like a lot less stress on the feeder house and Crary gearbox to start this way.
Haven't attempted to measure the difference in shatter/yield loss. But it definitely feeds better and can use the air to help push in the plants instead of the reel. Did notice fewer beans hitting the windshield compared to my previous combine and JD920 head when it got dry in the afternoons. | |
