Been wanting to inline rip some heavy traffic areas and patches of fields but I'm not sure if I'd be doing any good. I have looked into the limited amount of university studies and found little to no consistent return on the practice. I am no-till on all acres; most have not seen tillage for decades and 80% of my acres are terraced contoured hill ground. My thinking is either
A) all these years surely a compacted layer has arisen and breaking that layer every so many years would be beneficial for the soil to reset, and possibly help with nutrient stratification or
B) I would be destroying the years of built-up soil health and natural processes of the soil by ripping it open.
Besides a penetrometer how is compaction tested for?
We’ve run long term (4 years) in line ripping trials with a client. In corn it has been worth 7-11 bushels / ac. |
