Central Iowa | Back to your question on how to test for compaction: Dig a post hole 2 ft deep. You’ll need 2 pocket knives. Stab the first pocket knife into the sidewall of the post hole at the bottom. Pull up the sidewall like you’re gutting something out till it gets hard to pull. Take the second pocket knife and try slicing down from the top of the hole till it gets hard to do. The distance between the two knives is your compacted zone. It’s usually 7-9” below the soil surface and 3-5” thick. Now you know how deep to run your in-line ripper. I also take 2 soil samples, one above, and one below the compacted layer to tell what’s down there. I’ve been surprised often by the results. | |
