Ohio | We have spots that are the same but if your serious about fixing it you have to fix the root cause which is lack of oxygen in the soil. You can rip it and add in oxygen but it will settle down to exactly the way it was before. If I was fixing a field or spot I would first make sure it drains well then I would rip it as deep as I could with a healthy dose of high cal lime or gypsum. Then plant rye so the roots hold it together. Not a one year and done process either and might take large amounts of calcium to help keep it loose
