Subject: RE: Feeding Corn Stalks to Background Calves

Wabash county,Il
I’m in similar but different situation. Our hay inventories ended the year way short so we actually got some corn harvested with good drying weather so I baked 50 acres to feed to my dairy heifers to save hay for the calves and cows. The big difference is mine will be going through the tmr wagon with silage, gluten, and corn syrup so I’m not worried about them eating it.

For feeding bales free choice it may take some time for them to accept it after the first day of curiosity. I would maybe try to drop the tailings in a windrow and just bale behind the combine. Or I have windrow out of the combine then ran disc mower over that windrow and baled it. Either way that greatly reduces the dirt which will turn them away from eating faster than anything.
