Subject: Feeding Corn Stalks to Background Calves

East Central Ohio
Wanting to get some opinions on feeding cornstalk bales to a load of background steers over the winter.

With the drought here this year, hay is very short. Short enough that I ended up selling my grass hay and wrapped triticale that I planned on feeding over winter.

I couldn’t get a chopper lined up to chop any corn, so I am considering baling some corn stalks, soaking the bales with QLF, and feeding those along with some corn and limited hay to calves over winter until pastures green up. These calves will be out on pasture so there may be a little for them to pick, but not much. I’ve never fed stalks in this fashion before so I really have no idea if it would work. My nutritionist didn’t really act like it was an idea worth considering. Just wanted to see what everyone thought about it.
