There will be very few 800lb bales in SD. They are going to be 5x5 or 5x6 bales. “Here” a safe figure is 10 large rounds/cow per winter. As long as they have good wind protection and are well bedded they don’t need a barn to go in. However you need to do your homework on when you want to calf. I wait until cows are on pasture to start calving when weather is nice.
