Good idea. Dig half the clump or more. If you want more, divide it now. Mine is dormant from being dry, I'd leave the roots exposed for a couple days where you break them digging, then plant with plenty of compost, or cow lot soil but deep so the weed seeds don't come up. Then water in now, and again before the ground freezes. The portion you leave won't be hurt at all and you can pick off that if you want next year. Even if you try to take it all, leave the hole open, and the remaining roots will probably come up strong for more divisions.
