NW IL | A lot of vegetables (organic and non organic) and organic grains get imported. Often the import price sets the commodity price for those markets and wholesale buyers. Purdue found a cheap place to import organic sunflowers and the domestic price crashed almost 50%.
Domestic demand may increase, but unless there is tighter regulation around imports and origin of products you won't see prices change much.
In the organic world there are more and more large scale farmers figuring it out. I'm talking farms 2-5000ac in northern IL. I know of a few. I farm with my brothers and as a combined operation some would consider us "large scale organic." 24r planter, and thinking of a 24r cultivator, but there are 4 families working to cover those acres, plus a dairy to run.
There is often a market for locally grown, but you'll need to market direct to consumer which is a whole different type of farm business compared to commodity farming. | |
