Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | Out here on the western fringe planting corn a little later to avoid the heat in July is a fairly common practice. It’s biting us a little now. Had to shut down harvest for a few days to let the corn dry some.
We planted up until May 20th then was rained out for 9 days. Everything planted prior to May 20th is out of the field. Moisture on that ranged from 9.5% to 16%. Yea, the 9.5% was a shocker.
Now we’re looking at 17-25%. Very few dryers around here. Almost nonexistent as the corn usually always dries down. E plant and elevators will take it to 16 or so. Grumble after that.
The ground is very dry. I’m surprised the corn is hanging on to the moisture. It did get enough rain in August to mature naturally and not die so we do have a healthy plant.
The later corn sure looks to be the best corn. We’ll just have to wait a little longer to get it out.
