Southern MN | I think if you think organic leads back to simpler times you are mistaken. Am currently doing some organic but the truth is that during the span of the last few years things have changed dramatically. Many are starting to farm very large scale organic and just like conventional farming it is taking a fair amount of scale to pay for the equipment that it takes. A lot to deal with including the certifiers, trucking product a couple hundred miles, bean/corn walking crews, and basically a very busy summer. Personally think the smaller organic producers are going to get pushed out, hope that doesn’t happen. Right now I am on the fence, should really double acres to make it pay for all the BS involved, but don’t really have the desire to spend the money for equipment or spend the time to do it if not making really good money. | |
