Dig down to the approximate depth of the tile, can you form the sand into a “mud ball” or does it just fall apart? If you can form in into a ball, I use regular slot, if not you need sand slot. “Here” I don’t use a lot of sand slot unless it’s really sandy, especially if it’s just at the bottom end of the strings. If it’s just the bottom 1/4 of the string, I’d put regular slot in and call it good as the water from the top end of the strings will help keep everything clean. HOWEVER, if you are in doubt, sand slot is the safe way to go.

Also, “here” we will not use sock tile as the sock just plugs up and eventually the water won’t be able to penetrate the sock to get into the tile.

Edit to add: Usually, this is on mains and laterals with a tenth or less of grade.
