So what cover crop do you recommend in front of a corn crop?

We were in the "no grass into a grass" camp. For a few reasons. BUT- cereal rye is pretty easy to establish as well. We just got burned too many times trying to grow anything in a grass/grass rotation, elected to at least try some other things.

These were oil seed radish I had flown into 30" soys right before leaf drop. Timing obviously gets real critical- my senior partner (Dad) was not at all happy that we had more growth than he thought prudent. Combining wasn't an issue as it turns out though.

I can't find pictures now, but we also obtained some treated group 5 RUR soys one year. Flew those into standing wheat about a month preharvest. That was kind of OK also, but in reality planting oil seed radish with a drill post harvest was a better deal cover wise. The treated soy seed was free, so all we had into it was a little freight and the plane.
