North Central Illinois | I've used wheat because I had it leftover in the drill or had volunteer in double crop buckwheat. It is slower to put on biomass in the spring so easier to be sure to kill it before it gets out of hand. That's especially important to me as an organic grower who needs to wait for spring soil conditions to be fit for tillage to terminate it.
Last year I did try a mix of wheat, rye, and camelina (the wheat rye mix was due to volunteer rye in one patch of my wheat). That was my best corn field this year.
I'm planning on broadcasting barley this week before I spread poultry litter and disk it in to some bean stubble. We'll see how that goes. | |
