Been doing this a while and have worked/spoken with several producers all across the country trying cover crops with corn. The one thing that commonly shows up as a yield drag is N deficiency. We do some corn into green cover crop every year and it's never our worst corn and sometimes has been our best corn. Surface applied N does what you say it does but it does very little to contribute to yield. What you surface apply shouldn't be counted towards your N needs.
