EC IA | There's frequently discussion on here about corn and rye cover, so I thought some may be interested to hear this year's result for us. Overall this was a very good year for corn here - slightly on the wet side this spring, but with a couple decent planting windows. Good rains after that and very good farm-average yields. Overall, we're still disappointed with the result where there was rye - believe it to be 40+ bu/ac less than the rest of the field. Luckily it's only a few acres done as a test. I'll post the practices/dates this year, looking for input on how we should have managed this better...
- Rye "seeding" - volunteer rye from relay rye/beans in 2023. Guessing around 1 bu/ac loss, and most grew. Rye harvest date was late July of 2023, but probably didn't do much until the beans came off in early October.
- Rye termination - sprayed 4/14 with glyphosate, rye was ankle to mid-shin height
- Nitrogen/Sulfur - Preplant 85lb N & 5lb S applied with coulter/inject machine 4/24, 40lb N & 15lb S dribbled both sides of the row with the planter, 50lb N from 32% as carrier for pre-emerge chem, directly following the planter
- Planted 5/13 into dead rye
Here's a compilation of satellite images for the field this year, and a yield map:
