Subject: Italian Ryegrass after Alfalfa

We are taking out a stand of alfalfa this fall. Thinking about planting Italian ryegrass in that field next spring. We can’t plant it in the fall here as it won’t likely survive the winter. The nitrogen credit we get from alfalfa here is consistently plenty for a small grain crop and if guys try adding extra nitrogen coming out of alfalfa they usually end up with high nitrates in small grain crops.

My question is- can I add manure to this field prior to planting Italian ryegrass? Italian ryegrass can really yield if it has plenty of N. I haven’t heard of high nitrates in feed from adding manure, have you guys?

Please note- Italian ryegrass is much different than annual rye.
