Southern MN | Interesting as you are straight East of me, and not that far away. Our beans were not good this year but no till soybeans the yields on some fields were half of ours. Have the discussion with the agronomist every year it seems and his comments of what he sees is only 1 year out of 5 will we be happy with notill. We have neighbors who strip till c and s and most years the beans never get close to shading, maybe yields are close but it seems in May when I drive by I am convinced but by the time we drive by in August I am not. Plus buying a 650hp tractor to pull what has to be an incredibly expensive striptill bar and trying to get all of that done in what many years is a very short window is not very appealing either.
Sometimes I feel we are in just a tough area. Seems we have heavier spring rains most years. We are colder by quite a bit in the spring than the very western MN and SD guys are. Have very heavy soils. We also don’t get the late July /Aug rains that seem to fall east of here and by Sioux Falls most years.
By the way if you are by Spring Valley I don’t know what it is but I have never seen that area have a bad crop. Usually drive through that area in Aug/Sept and it is always beautiful. | |
