Our local independent seed company is having people experiment with seeding red clover in thin alfalfa stands. The toxicity does not effect the clover, and it has similar feed quality to alfalfa. The idea is to seed the clover into the thin spots in alfalfa fields that are no longer top producing, but not so bad the whole thing needs to be torn up. I'm going to try it next year, but a couple people I talked to who tried it said so far so good although I have heard the clover winter kills easier than alfalfa. You can also kill an alfalfa field and immediately seed it to the clover.
Oh, and the Red Clover is not toxic to alfalfa seedlings, so it works the other way as well. I'm planning to experiment with it in a couple thin spots in my fields so I guess I'll find out how well it works.
My brother did that with berseem clover a couple years ago. First cutting was still poor but the rest of the year it yielded well and tested great. |
