North Dakota | I have also had success disking black in the fall and then fencing part of the field onto a pasture. The part I disked in the spring and seeded oats into (after disking again in spring) had little alfalfa come up with the oats but the part of the field I fenced into the pasture, like you said, was as thick as hair. I hayed it.
I have since tried it but it wasn't successful again and wrote it off as conditions just being right.
At the time I didn't have a heavy disk and after your comment It may be that I didn't go deep enough to properly break up the root so as to make more plants.
My attempt at that is the anhydrous Knives could do the same thing only in much smaller steps.
My intent is to go around the field the 1st year, diagonally the 2nd year and then diagonally the other way the following year.
I have 30 acres of a good stand abt 6 years old I have started this on.
After the 1st time the plants did not thin out and are thick and close together still but it has the "bugs" and I have also been taking the hay very early.
I only get 1 bale per acre but it is as good of quality as the 2nd cutting stuff I used to put up.
The regrowth could produce another 1/2 bale but would leave the field with little or no cover over the winter so I just leave it.
I can't now remember the variety of the alfalfa but it was the viney Kind they said was good for grazing. (I wasn't paying attention at the time working in the oilfield at a mind numbing pace).
I have since been planting the common variety.
Anyway, I do have a 16' Wisheck disk and guess what I am going to try next.
Question: In the fall or in the Spring?
