| If you were nearby, I’d recommend at the least hiring somebody like me to come in the spring with a coulter striptill machine and put on half what you were previously broadcasting at a minimum, before going the all or nothing broadcast approach. For the reasons GrainTrader mentioned above. This process would also allow a split N application, whereby I’d recommend applying 40 lbs actual N in urea form in the strip. This would take the place of expensive liquid starter planter applied, with better results, and considerably less cost per unit. I haven’t tried it, but been hearing the ads for 98G pellitized lime, and 8 bushels corn and 3 bushels beans better than non applied. These are results I can believe in, and not a “snake oil”. Putting this product in a banded strip would make it even more viable vs broadcast, imo. Back in the 80’s and 90’s, when we still had planters with dry fertilizer, standard operating procedure was applying pell lime on the beans, with similar results as today’s claims. Then, like most, as acres grew, the need for more planter capacity meant upgrading to 16 and 24 row planters and ditching planter banded fertilizer, in the name of covering more acres. All you’d have to do after I left the field is pull in and plant the seed. And watch the results.
