As far as a 'foot around' the plant, IDK. I'll try attaching a piece from Purdue on autotoxicity. Therre's a picture (figure 6) that shows an old plant with new plants growing near the old one. They are shorter closer to the old plant. If you are planting where it's wet, remember alfalfa doesn't like wet feet. However, there is a new 'branch root' alfalfa out that can stand more wet feet, if I understand correctly.
