As mentioned though almost all of the snowmelt runs off of the fields because the ground underneath the snow is still frozen. Usually anyways there is the odd year where an early heavy snowfall insulated the ground enough that it hardly freezes at all. For the most part though all winter snowfall does in the more northern climates is it fills sloughs and dugouts. That does provide moisture to evaporate again and hopefully provide some spring showers to rain down on thawed soil later though so there is that. But as far as adding to soil moisture winter snowfall itself usually does very little to improve the situation.

Edit to add: I assume that doesn’t apply to the warmer climates though and thus the differences in opinions.
