southern MN | A lot of records in Ellis Island. As newcomers were processed into the country.
Many settlers in my area were processed through Chicago from the Germanic regions.
Quite a few were leaving bad political issues ‘back home.’ More or less from the early setup for wwi.
There was a German prisoner camp in town in wwii. It was turned into a state park. Anyhow, several of the prisoners there came back to visit in following decades. They sympathized more with the USA side than the German side, they enjoyed being our prisoners more so than basically imprisoned into ‘thei’r army. Anyhow from the history I hear, I guess we no longer believe in history and rewrite it every few years.
But, that is how I understand and believe it. My grandmother came along over with her brother so he didn’t travel alone, so my opinion is based on 2 generation old handed down stories. You can take that for what you want and anyone can twist it into their advantage I’m sure.
I find it interesting for myself, and that is good enough for me.
