You can do a mite wash for varroa. Use alcohol or soapy water. There are shaker cups specifically for this. I have sprayed insecticide right next to my hives at 8am with no ill effects. Highly doubt that is the case here, especially given your location, but I was wrong two other times this week. Maybe 3.
