I thought a swarm divided the colony by rearing a new queen and sending her out with part of the workers. That leaves the old colony vulnerable with an elderly queen, or rather the age of the queen encourages the workers to hedge their bets by splitting off with their new younger sister. So it could be either way, swarm and colony death, or pesticide.
