It's not unusual for bees to hang out on the outside of the boxes, especially if they are crowded and it's a hot day. But those photos look like a colony that's getting ready to swarm. This is a very bad time of year for them to abandon all that they've worked for...but a heavy mite infestation would do it. That wouldn't explain all the dead bees inside, though.
