I’m with you. I don’t see why there’s so much hate.
$40 bill X 15% =$6 tip. It would be obvious to bring a couple 5’s back or really smart waitress may bring a 5 and 5 1’s so you can give any of the popular tip percentages.
I always assume when they do that they are rolling the dice that you don’t have tip money and will leave the big bill since you feel bad leaving just the one.

My friends that own restaurants have their girls provide their own change so it’s possible she’s out of change, rolling the dice on a big tip or just too inexperienced to know.

I used to run a mostly cash business in college. I learned really fast that I better either have correct change on me or charge in increments of $20 or $100. Unless I wanted to short myself by $15 when you didn’t have change for a 20 when the bill was $175. I ended up just going up to $20 increments and that worked way better since most folks hit the ATM.

I hate it, but if I pay cash and you don’t bring me the change to leave a proper tip, I’m only going to go up to about 20% tip for a normal in and out meal. That goes out the window though if we sat and drank a couple beers and tied a table up for a while or service was really good. So if that happens to me your at the mercy of what you brought me plus whatever is in my wallet, wife’s wallet. It doesn’t happen often, but now and then it’s a pretty sorry tip. If it’s a place I frequent I’ll send a 20 back to get broke though.
