SW OH | I don't think they are trained in anything, like waitressing or cash. Both my ex wife and current wife have spent several years as a waitress. They both worked in places where they picked up the money at the table and returned the change to the table. They both knew if they wanted a tip to give back a variety of bills.
90% of our eating out is at the same restaurant where everything is great. The other 10% the service is almost always bad.
My wife just walked in and I asked her. She agrees as well. If a waitress wants a tip she needs to make it easy for the customer. She thinks since your waitress returned your 10 dollar bill she did not deserve any tip, not even the dollar bill. She was a good waitress and made very good tips. She is very critical about current servers and not afraid to tell current ones what they did wrong.
