Subject: RE: Catechism Confirmation class

Talking LCMS here. When I was in confirmation over 25 years ago, we did exactly what your pastor wants for a schedule. The current church I go to also uses that same schedule. This is considered the "Light" version by a lot of ministers. I know a lot of LCMS churches that do three and four years once a week during the school year. But I also see a lot of parents that are burnt out after 2 years, but yet they never burn out from hauling kids to sports...

From my take, I went to a Lutheran school, so two years was sort of overkill, as I had religion five days a week all school year. Now, with my kids, I don't have the option to send them to a Lutheran school, and I really am not sure that two years is enough. I feel like the point of confirmation should be a lot more than memory work. It should teach how to fully understand the doctrine and how it relates to their lives and make decisions that are god pleasing. For example, at Lutheran school, we talked a lot about not voting for candidates who do not represent our Christian views. Ultimately, it's the parent's responsibility to make sure that the kids use their faith in their everyday lives. However I don't know that all parents can be trusted to do that.

The bottom line is that I would have them go for at least two years, and I'd try for three if you can get the minister to do it.
