| i`m at the age where i have to live in this world a bit longer, while still recalling how things used to be. in the mid 70s i was a "middle class kid" my uncle and his fishing buddy took me fishing, on the way to the lake the old buddy was lamenting on all the recently abandoned railroad lines and why the trains couldnt make it. my uncle answered "isaid it before, when the president of the railroad made more than the president of the United States... they cut their own ttthhroats!" ($200,000/yr). well, look at all the industries today where all the bigwigs make more than the president of the United States. before anyone gets on my case for being a "communist", we werent exactly communists back in 1974 :-)
but, my point is, what motivation is there for a 20yr old today that wasnt "college material"? real wages have be stagnant for 40 years, they get a job that starts at $20/hr, and maybe just maybe one day theyll become supervisor and make $30/hr. oh i know there are opportunities to start a you tube channel or be a day trader on robinhood or win the powerball jackpot. but, that unskilled "dirty job" where you gave a pound of your flesh, in exchange for wages where you could buy a new chevy, and a cookie cutter ranch style and send your kids to iowa state for a $3,000 tuition no longer exists.
meanwhile billionaires are more common than millionaires used to be. you cant pound enough nails, farrow enough sows, plow enough acres on a 4020 to honestly earn $1 billion. to be a billionaire, you gotta do funny stuff on the stock market to get that rich. and dont get me wrong, not all billionaires are bad, theres good ones like trump, elon musk, ross perot and them guys and thank God for them because they have the means to fight this system, without their patriotism and means, it would be an even more orwellian world.
if money was worth what it was 40 years ago, i think there would be all sorts of American workers coming out with hope and the ambition to work overtime. | |
