Subject: RE: New guy here

East TN
Sorry y’all wasn’t too familiar with the etiquette here. I’m in east TN just north of Knoxville. To answer a few of y’all questions:

While I do enjoy a good cigar, I also remember growing tobacco as a kid…it’d take a lot of convincing that’s all I’ll say, lol.

As far as equipment yes, and no. I’m actually quite fortunate overall. Couple years ago my grandmother sold all the cattle cause we leased out the land (I have a younger brother who has equal shares, idk if I mentioned that before) However, we put the equipment up in storage…till last year when our barn was taken out by a storm. Had that rebuilt in February…then another storm in May took that building out. A month ago a new building has been put up and fingers crossed stays up. Lot of the equipment was damaged but insurance is SLOWLY getting it worked out. So they’re things I have and things I need. I actually have to put together a new list of assets for said insurance soon so I’ll have a better idea on that later.

As far as mentoring with the neighbor…not sure I could. He didn’t seem to want to get out of it. He says his wife is making him quit farming but a lot of people believe it’s his health and he didn’t want to talk about it so I didn’t push.

When it comes to how much land I have…I don’t even know how to explain it because it still confuses me. There’s land that no one bothered to do paperwork since my great grandfather who passed away before I was born and is just now finishing up probate court. There’s land my grandfather owned whos passed, land my grandmother owns who’s still living and land that came from my mothers side and she (mom) actually runs cattle on with my help. (That’s another thing I haven’t been completely removed from farming, just not really in charge. I take a couple weeks of work to help bale hay or something of the like) as a quick estimate I think I have three parcels in this county 130, 65, and 40 acre. With an additional 115 acres in the next county over. Also take into account half of all that area is wooded as we live in a mountainous area.

As far as working for another farm, not really an option in this area. We only really have one or two big farms and unless your from south of the border let’s say, no luck. It doesn’t help that most land in the area is being bought up to turn to housing because of a local lake and tourism is far more profitable.

Hope that answers some questions if you have any more I am an open book.

Thanks, Jack
