I believe the diesel locomotive's primary purpose is to provide power to the passenger cars and dynamic braking for the train to save wear on the Big Boy's expensive brake shoes. And of course extra hp if needed.
I'd bet 90% of the reason it is there is so that if the Big Boy has problems, they don't have an antique train blocking a line with another train sitting behind or in front of it waiting for it to get out of the way.
