NC IA | I went to college, worked corporate job after school and then came back to the farm around 7 years later. I'd say have a plan in place before you dive in, be very clear on expectations with everyone - too many stories about someone coming back to farm and they end up just continuing to help the previous generation keep going. I'm still working my corporate job today (12 years later). Having my town job is almost necessary as farming takes so much capital to farm. I think it took me 10 years of farming before I started being able to actually keep some of the money I was making - this is because you will constantly be reinvesting into the farm operation = replacing older equipment, fixing things, etc. | |
