Subject: My experience with Steer Command Z2 and Deere CAN

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I'm not certain if your 8270R can utilize the CAN version of Steer Command Z2. My best guess is maybe.

I have an 8310R but am not certain of the year. For what its worth my Serial Number is: 1RW8310RJDP073999. I don't know if any of the letters have any significance for the steering.

My tractor was out on a short term lease to a local vegetable processing plant when new. While there, a Trimble Auto Pilot was temporarily installed. It used the tractor's CAN system so the Trimble third party unlock was installed in the tractor. The Trimble system was removed when the tractor was returned from lease.

When I took ownership, I wanted to use an Ag Leader InCommand 1200 with Ag Leader steering. Ag Leader's legacy SteerCommand was current at that time. It was installed and worked through the tractor's CAN system also. The holes that had been drilled through the floor for the Trimble system module were reused for the Ag Leader module. The third party unlock for Ag Leader from Deere was installed in the tractor. I do not know if it is different than the Trimble Unlock, overwrote the Trimble unlock or if my tractor has both unlocks. There was also a charge for the CAN steering unlock for the Steer Command. This means there were two unlocks involved. One from Deere for the tractor itself and another from Ag Leader for the module.

When Ag Leader came out with the Steer Command Z2, I was advised to go with it. The switch from Steer Command to the Steer Command Z2 (don't know why they didn't change the name more) was extremely easy and just a matter of swapping the steering modules. No wiring changes were necessary. The Ag Leader third party unlock which was in the tractor for the Steer Command was appropriate for the Steer Command Z2 so that did not need to be changed.

The Steer Command Z2 with a Terra Star unlocked and subscribed GPS 7500 works extremely well. Steering can be activated via the screen or the Deere switch in the Command Arm. This year I purchased the Turn Path automated turn around feature since the tractor is used for planting. It worked very well also.

I also have Ag Leader's Steady Steer (assisted steering wheel style) for use in my 9770 combine. This turns the steering wheel for me and does not involve the CAN system of the combine. It works very well and would be suitable for many situations.
