Browning BT is the classic starter trap gun. If you don't know if he will stay with trap shooting, then a field gun. I used to think I shot well with a field gun, but when I went to a trap gun, it was a noticeable difference and improvement. Do not expect to use a trap gun latter for a field gun. The ribs and flow of the gun is just different. A BT is single shot and not going to work for a field gun.
If you get a BT, I would consider just a base gun and not spend crazy money for a fancy version with all the adjustability for a beginner.
My son shot trap and used a double barrel Browning PT which is considered a classic trap gun. No adjustability in the comb or stock. Basic gun no frills and won State with it. I saw lots of $5000+ guns used by kids for trap shooting in high school. IMHO, not needed. The shooter and practice is number 1. My only good advice for my son was to aim fast and shoot fast. Some of the best shooters were often the quickest. Dont let it fly farther than its needs. Longer shots are just harder, hence why their are handicap places to stand for trap shooting. Huge difference when shooting the the 18 yard position vs the 27 yard position.
Tha fancy version will give him the availability to fit the gun to himself. Both my boys are in aim(ata) at 13 years old. I've fought their length of pull for 2 years. It's terrible to have a gun not fit you, and beat you crazy. New bt99 are absolute junk, and the good older ones are half shot out. While years ago the BT was the norm, today there are several other guns out there. I really think that the tri star (other than heavy) isn't to bad, though I question the how well it would hold out if your son shoots a lot. Best thing I done was to get precision fit stocks. That allows to fit them to the gun. Took both their scores from 90 ish to 100 straight over night, If the gun has an adjustable rib. I bought one of my boys a browning universal high post last year at the grand for 500 cheaper than a crappy old bt. It's only sold by guns of ohama. It is a over/under on a citori frame. It's nothing fancy but it's respectable. My other boy I lucked into a kreighoff kx5 with a pfs for 3500. Another gun to look at is a Beretta a400 multi target. Super soft shooting with a kickoff with a fully adjustable rib, though the lop isn't adjustable. It is truely crazy how many 12-18 year old kids I seen getting fit with new 30k kolars at the grand this year. Biggest part is get him a gun that fits. Make sure length of pull is correct can he line up his beads side to side without contorting his face. And make sure it at least have an mid rib where his front to rear bead it can stack it like a figure 8. Best of luck and have fun. Just to warn you the gun is the cheapest thing...... My boys shot 10k shells a piece just this year. Might check with other local clubs. Normally someone around will sell flats of shells a little cheaper to kids. Best of luck |
