We bought a stethoscope and cuff and use it to compare to machine.  It's really easy to do, not to yourself but my wife and I do each other's.  Use the machine most of the time but do it manually to check to see how they compare.  Our old family dr always held our arm when he took it and he always took it himself even if the nurse had already taken it.
