NWMO | Test weight isn’t the end all be all of yield, it’s a metric of yield. We grow corn that has excellent test weight and we grow a specialty food grade corn that is lucky to reach 52 lb test weight and the difference is noticeable by everyone who encounters it
We had white corn a couple years ago that was 62 lb/bu test weight with excellent kernel size. Prior to hauling that corn, we were hauling our specialty corn at ~50 lb/bu test weight. They were filling the trailers pretty full of the specialty corn and were barely reaching 85k lb/load.
The first driver made the mistake of loading the white corn the same way and when he got back to the farm he says “whoa, I went across the scale and I was waayyyy heavier than last week and loaded the trailer to the same level.” I then had to explain the test weight discrepancy. Both grains were at roughly 16% and the specialty corn had good kernel size also. | |
