Trade imbalances do matter and they mattered when trump reduced the trade disparity with china. Mattered a lot to grain producers whether they will acknowledge it or not.

You can spin anything.

The trade disparity between us and china is important. They rely on us greatly. Only fair to make them buy something from us rather than our competitors. Its a good business model if you want america to remain dominant versus china
